Post Portland. It was an alright weekend.

Hey guys

Well, that was a bit frantic wasn’t it!!!

Another formula e race weekend draws to a close, with it being in Portland, Oregon, US.

Now I cant say this was one of my absolute favourite race weekends, and to why I’ll get in to the specifics later on.

But wow, formula e does produce its drama!!!!!

Nissan had to field Caio Collet, as Oliver Rowland could not compete due to illness. He has since felt better, and will be hopefully available for London in a few weeks’ time. He uploaded an official statement on his Instagram yesterday morning confirming that he does feel better, and he is hopefully able to compete in a few weeks’ time at his home race.

Also, I cant say I am a massive fan of the peloton style of racing at tracks like Portland, and the amount of damage to cars, especially on the Sunday is why. if its too close and edgy for the cars to not get damaged or pushed either off track, or in to a spin, it does make me question whether formula e cars are ready for permanent circuits.

Now on to the race review:

Pre-race: (in case you missed the blog, gonna keep it brief though in case you have)

Looking forward to it.

Cassidy won in 2023, and currently sits atop the championship.

Could he win again in 2024???????

Close battle for the championship this year, with Jake Hughes working hard last time out to get his first podium in his formula e career.

DAC and Porsche have had their penalty appeal declined by the FIA, so the decision to disqualify him from the Misano ePrix still stands.

Jaguar could win the championship this weekend

FP1

Nothing major to report. Was a quiet session by formula e standards.

FP2

Red flag. Was caused by Sacha’s Nissan grinding to a halt.  At the end of the session Nissan confirmed that they were investigating the issue, but as they got Sacha out for Qualifying, I don’t think it was too serious. Sacha would have had to have been penalised if he needed a new gearbox, so in a way I’m glad everything was ok.

Race

5 drivers took penalties:

Nato for receiving more than 3 reprimands in a season [10 places]

Bird for causing a collision with De Vries in Shanghai [5 places]

Buemi for using 1 gearbox more than the allotted allocation for the season

[20 places converted in to a drive through as he couldn’t serve the full penalty]

De Vries for causing a collision with Daruvala in Shanghai [3 places]

Lucas Di Grassi for causing a collision with Daruvala in Shanghai [3 places]

Clean start from everyone.

Attack Mode was in Turn 7, like last year. 6 minutes of Attack Mode deployment available to the teams for the weekend.

Mitch received a 5 second penalty for causing a collision with Jake Hughes.

It was reviewed by the stewards before FP3, as Jaguar activated their right to review, but was inevitably upheld. Now should this have been a penalty? I’m 50/50 on it, as it forced Jake off the road with a puncture, however it was such light contact. I’m more leaning towards racing incident. Like I said on the FE Bar on Monday Night, should it have been penalised in the first place? But more on penalties that should have been given but weren’t later on.

To quote the official documentation:

“Upon review, the Stewards recognized that the driver of Car 9 made an effort to avoid

contact with Car 5, but it is the view of the Stewards that Car 9 could have made even

more of an effort to avoid contact, and as such, Decision 18 is upheld.

The Stewards appreciate Jaguar TCS Racing for their preparation and presentation of this

new, significant and relevant evidence”

Mitch won on the road, but dropped down to 8th. Da costa inherited the race win, with Frijns in Second and JEV in 3rd. Cassidy unfortunately span out of the lead, and out of any realistic points chance, but still somehow leads the championship going in to the final races in London. Its going to be fun for sure. And yes I am attending :P.

Race

4 retirements:

Both Mahindra’s

Both McLarens

All due to damage caused by collisions and punctures.

1 SC period for debris

The entire field had to bunch up so that the marshals could retrieve the debris safely, as instructed very sensibly by Scot Elkins the race director.

Pascals wing dislodged from his car and caused Sams eventual retirement from the race. Should this have been a penalty? Or should Porsche have at least been fined for letting Pascal drive around in an unsafe condition? I’m not the FIA, but surely that was at least a fine for Porsche? Anyway.

Max Guenther 3 place grid drop for London. Causing a collision with Daruvala his teammate.

3 place Grid drop, as he had to retire from the race, otherwise it would have most likely been a 5 second time penalty. Did max spin Jehan around, or was it the other way around?

The stewards have been so inconsistent recently, and as Mitch rightfully said, the stewards have been "inconsistently consistent" this year, and I would have to agree there, as penalties that should have been given weren’t, and penalties that weren’t penalties were given unrightfully. Should this be allowed to happen, or should the FIA, get more permanent stewards? Or leave it as it was. But as I don’t work for the fia, I’ll just leave it there. But it is definitely food for thought

I’m going to leave you with the race results, championship standings, and I’ll see you guys after the ;last weekend of the year in London. Which I am also attending 😊
