Hey guys. It's that time again!!!
Season 7 has officially come to its conclusion with Laney also (figuratively speaking) jumping ship; his move to Mercedes EQ FE made official by the team during the final race in berlin. Now whilst i am a little surprised with this move, i also remembered that everyone moves on. Not only the drivers, but the engineers and team personnel too. There was a really cute message from laney that landed in my twitter inbox on Friday the 13th of all days, but more on that later. There was a lot going on this season; Robin's first pole, Nicks rookie season being ramped up by 2 poles and 2 podium finishes (a P2 and P3), robin being the only driver to finish every lap of every race (that completed a full season). But yeah. Here comes the dive in to my season 7 highlights. Enjoy!!!!
1. The London ePrix
This was special, as not only was it my first race, but I was gifted 2 tickets, which were both fully paid for, by the team. The ePrix was invite only and to be one of 1400 people who got an invite was really special. My first eprix weekend, and not only did i get to go with friends, I also met Max Guenther, Nicki Shields, Gary Paffett, Ian James, Rebecca Banks and Allan McNish. The ePrix itself, well... A mega charge from both Nick and Robin up the field to P4 and 8 respectively. I thought robin was going to get a podium at one point, but he was just a tad too far back from Mitch Evans. Also seeing Alex Lynn, another one of my favourites win his home eprix, the day after Jake Dennis won his 2nd race of the season. Was special to say the least.
2) the EVR temporary Harrods exhibit.
now, this has also made the Season 7 highlights for a number of reasons.
a) it was the first time i was in London on my own
b) i got to try a professional simulator for the first time, although i flipped the car on the out lap #awks.
c) to have an exhibit of that scale in the biggest department store in the world is just so special.
D) the Harrods logo was displayed on the car for the rest of the season which I found super special and exciting
So yeah. That was awesome.
3) A really special message from mr eyes forward on the last race weekend of the season. 2 days before his move to merc would be made official by the team.
This was special and not only meant the world to me, but also took me by surprise. I was not expecting it and to know everything I sent for him truly meant the world was special. If you follow me on twitter you'll know this quote as it is in my bio, but I'll add it again anyway
"it's been great to have such a superfan. Really appreciated all the things you've sent me"
That quote will be forever special to me, and, to be raw and honest with you guys, when it was announced 1 year after Sam Bird left the team (more or less) I did sob a little bit. He’s done a lot for the team behind the scenes, whether that be simulator, meetings, results. The list goes on. it did finally hit me when it was announced by the team, having first been reported in a the race article in June that the deal was signed elsewhere, and now, whoever is to step in the shoes of the lane dog, has got quite big ones to fill. That is a fact. Envision virgin lose what Mercedes gain. A really hard worker. Those who know me know I love Laney whenever he gets on the radio, and his signature catchphrase has got me through a lot. Even helped me pass my English to a degree as it was constantly going through my head. But yeah. This is gonna take some time to get over, but I will continue to support envision virgin racing no matter who steps in to those shoes.
4) first poles and first podiums
To witness these was spectacular. Robin's first pole position 48 races after his debut. Was special to say the least. After heavily crashing in FP2 the day before, and subsequently missing quali due to a battery change forcing the car to not be ready in time to qualify, he put it together when it mattered in race 2 and finally got his first pole position in his formula e career.
Nick's first pole, AS A ROOKIE, 4 races in to his formula e career, his second coming in race 1 in New York, with Rome being the first all-rookie front row. Nick's first podium came after knocking on the door for what seemed like forever in Puebla. The day before, he had a superbly big crash going in to turn 8, forcing the team to do an entire race day on 1 and ½ hours sleep due to needing to repair the car on a new chassis overnight; also needing the FIA's permission to break parc ferme regulations to avoid penalties. He quickly repaid them for it though. A great quali qualifying in P7, followed by superb overtakes to get to the flag in P3. That being the perfect way to finish a tough weekend for the team and the kiwi. it was a long time coming that's for sure.
So those are the highlights of season 7 for me.
